Joys of Home Ownership

The past couple of weeks Utah has had a big inversion. Our pollution levels were 4 of the top 5 worst in the country. So when we started receiving rain (mixed with snow at times) we were all glad to see the inversion break up. That is, until we noticed our basement flooding early Saturday morning. The area of the basement that was flooding wasn't the corner where nothing is, but instead, the corner where our offices are. Most of Jeremy's work papers, supplies, and books were destroyed. We managed to dry out a few things and luckily the power supply cords to our computers weren't ruined. However, we were forced to spend all of Saturday and Sunday siphoning our murky water, dumping gallons and gallons of water, and then drying out our wet insulation, etc. Late Sunday afternoon, with the help of some of our neighbors, we were able to get some sandbags from our Public Works building. With those and our large tent tarp, we were able to somewhat block off the area outside where the water was coming from, and since then we have not had anymore flooding.

(Spring 2008... we had to temporarily trench the yard all the way to the front yard)

Last spring when our fence was being installed, we ran into a similar problem. When the spring rains came and the snow started melting, we received all the run-off from the city's property behind us, as well as the run-off from our neighbors. Before we even laid our sod, we brought in a huge dump truck of topsoil to help level off the yard to avoid any future flooding. What we thought we corrected is now back again due to settling of the soil. So this spring we'll have to do some more landscaping in order to avoid this problem again. At least our basement wasn't finished yet!

This was the area where the flooding was. Before the sandbags we tried to divert the water away with heavy bags of soil. That obviously did not work!

The tasty water that Jeremy siphoned. (He did end up throwing up because of it.) At least when we had to do it again on Sunday, the water was pretty clear.

The window well that would fill up. At one point, the water level was up to the second rivet. Back in October when Jeremy was away in Hawaii and the window started flooding, I found a dead frog floating in the water.

Jackson (and Alora) were the only ones who thought it was cool that water was coming in the window.
